The Anemoi (Wind Gods)

Although 'The Anemoi' refer to the four main directional winds (North, East, South and West), three of which were seasonal winds (Boreas - Winter, Zephyrus - Spring, and Notos - Late Summer/Autumn), I have listed all eight winds along with their direction and a brief description. Please also note that in some references Apeliotes (East Wind) and Euros (South East Wind) are cited as being the oppposite way round.

Wind Name Direction Description
Boreas North The cold breath of winter. Depicted with shaggy hair and beard, a billowing cloak and a conch shell in his hands.
Kaikias North East A bearded man with a shield full of hail-stones.
Apeliotes East A young clean-shaven man holding a cloak full of fruit and grain
Euros South East An old bearded man wrapped tightly in a cloak against the elements
Notos South The rain-storms of late summer and autumn. Depicted emptying an urn of water.
Lips South West Depicted Pushing the stern of a ship, promising good sailing winds.
Zephyrus West The God of light spring breezes. Depicted as a beardless youth scattering flowers from his cloak.
Skirion North West A bearded man with a bronze pot full of hot ashes and charcoal
