Hebrew Alphabet

The Hebrew Alphabet, or more correctly the Alef-bet, consists of 22 letter consonants, which are used for writing the Hebrew language. Five of these letters (sofit characters) appear in a different form at the end of a word.

Unlike western scripts Hebrew is written and read from right to left.

In the Masoretic text of the Hebrew Bible (or Tanakh), there are special characters or marks called Cantillation marks, which compliment the letters and niqqud (vowel points).

Niqqud (Vowel Points)

Over many years a system of vowels called niqqud (Var. spelling nikud) has been added to the Hebrew alphabet. These are mostly seen in school books and prayer books. Most newspapers, signs, magazines and most other printed materials in Israel today do not use them.
