Runic Alphabets

Runic Alphabets are traditionally known as a FUTHARK; a name composed of the first six letters of the alphabet. Not much is known about their origins. In Old Norse languages the word rune means 'inscription', 'letter' or 'text'. In Old Germanic languages it also means 'secret' or 'mystery'. Runes had and still have an important role in ritual and magic.

Younger (Scandinavian) Futharks

The Scandinavian or Younger Futhark evolved from the Elder Futhark until about 800 A.D., the beginning of the Viking Era. It was the main alphabet in Norway, Sweden and Denmark throughout the Viking Age. It was mostly replaced by the Latin alphabet by about the 13th century.

Three different versions of the alphabet developed in Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

Hungarian Runes were a type of runic alphabet used by the Magyars until the 11th century. The first Catholic king of Hungary, St. Stephen I ordered that all traditional writings be destroyed and that the Christian (Latin) alphabet be adopted. However, these runes remained in use in remote regions of Transylvania until the late 1850s
