William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, and died on 23rd April 1616 (it is often said he died on his birthday) and was buried in the chancel of Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon. During his lifetime he wrote approximately 38 plays and 154 sonnets, as well as assorted other works of poetry.

At the age of 18 he married the 26 year old Anne Hathaway who is commonly presumed to have been 3 months pregnant with their daughter Susanna at the time. He and Anne went on to have twins in 1583, a daughter Judith and son Hamnet who died in 1596.

By late 1594, Shakespeare had moved to London and was working as an actor, writer and part-owner of a playing company, known as the Lord Chamberlain's Men, upon the death of Queen Elizabeth and the coronation of James I their patronage was adopted by the new king and they changed their name to the Kings Men.

He wrote his last two plays in 1613, after which he returned to Stratford where he died.
