The average adult human skeleton consists of 206 bones, though this may vary from person to person due to things such as extra ribs. Babies are born with approximately 300 bones, the difference in number lies with bones that fuse as a child grows such as the sacrum and coccyx of the vertebral column. The sacrum (the bone at the base of the spine) consists of five bones which are separate at birth but fuse together into a solid structure in later years. Bone growth is usually completed between the ages of 13 and 18.
