*The Constellations and Named Stars*



Right Ascension (RA) is the celestial equivalent of terrestrial longitude. Both RA and longitude measure an east-west angle along the equator, and both measure from a specific zero point on their respective equators. Whereas for terrestrial longitude the zero point is the Prime Meridian at Greenwich in London, for RA the zero point is called the vernal equinox point. The Vernal Equinox is the place in the sky where the Sun crosses the celestial equator at the March equinox. Declination (Dec) is measured in degrees, minutes and seconds, north and south of the celestial equator and is comparable to terrestrial latitude. All points north of the celestial equator have positive declination, while those to the south have negative declination. Magnitude (V) of a star, planet or other celestial body is a measure of its brightness when seen by an observer on Earth. The brighter the object appears, the lower the numerical value of its magnitude. Messier Objects are a systematic list of nebulae and star clusters, first compiled and published in 1771 by Charles Messier. This original list only contained 45 objects. The final list, published in 1784, contained 103 objects, some of which were later removed from the list. Between 1921 and 1966 a further seven objects were added (M104 to M110). Designations from Messier's catalog are frequently used to refer to the brighter nebulae and star clusters.
