Zodiacs
| |
The term Zodiac is traditionally thought to have derived its name from the Latin zodiacus, meaning "circle of little animals", although a more likely explanation is that the term was borrowed from the Sanskrit sodi, denoting "a path", i.e., the path through which the sun travels, as at least one of the signs in the zodiac does not represent a living creature. Indo-European cultures developed a zodiac of twelve signs associated with the constellations of stars that lie along the Sun's yearly path across the heavens (the ecliptic) and used in astronomy and astrology. In fact though, the sun passes through 13 constellations and not 12, the 13th, Ophiuchus, is often wrongly called "The 13th sign of the zodiac.

Jewish (Hebrew) Calendar
| |
| |
The Jewish calendar is based on three astronomical phenomena: the rotation of the Earth about its axis (a day); the revolution of the moon about the Earth (a month); and the revolution of the Earth about the sun (a year). It coordinates all three of these astronomical phenomena. Months are either 29 or 30 days, corresponding to the 29½-day lunar cycle. Years are either 12 or 13 months, corresponding to the 12.4 month solar cycle.
The lunar month on the Jewish calendar begins when the first sliver of moon becomes visible after the dark of the moon. In ancient times, the new months used to be determined by observation.

Chinese Zodiac Months
The twelve animals also apply to the lunar months. The month born affects a person's inner animal, as stated above. Remember, the Chinese Calendar is offset to start in the traditional February, or even in late January.
